Let's move on to mechanics that would make ships more relevant for guild use.įirstly, swimming. So that's where I'll stop for ship types. The mid sized one would probably still be just as effective at interception/escort. The medium sized longship could hold 24 people, obviously being slower but more capable offensively. They are the perfect choice for mid sized guilds or small ones that wish to have some military presence at sea. Capable of marine landings and escort/interception of ships. One person to steer and one person to manage the rigging, I mention this because the Longship would probably be the fastest ship in the game. There'd be 5 sets of oars or so, each one operated by 2 people. The small one would probably carry around 12 people, all of whom could function as crew or passengers. The longship could come in two sizes, small and medium. The Longship! The longship needs little explaining background wise (hopefully most people reading are familiar with the viking longships of legend). It's passengers could wield ranged weapons if need be as the Knarr wouldn't be incredibly fast, nor slow. Just like the small cog, it would be easily beachable, and easily put out to sea. The knarr is pretty much exclusively sail powered and would serve well as a trade ship for smaller guilds.
LIFE IS FEUDAL WIKI BOAT PLUS
In-game however I'd think it more fitting for it to be on the smaller size, probably with the carrying capacity of a horse cart, as well as a 2 man crew plus 3 passengers. In reality it came in many sizes as it was the viking people's most common form of shipborne transport, just like the cog. It is a relative of the Longship that's primary focus is trade/personnel transport. The Knarr would probably be one of the most prevalent ships in-game. Warfare engineering would also allow boarders to destroy a cog utilizing the demolition skill tree, as well as allowing coast based guilds to construct Trebuchets/Catapults as shore defenses. Ship to ship combat would rely heavily on the exotic types of ammunition available to slingers and rangers already in game (NAPTHA/Fire/Firework ammunitions). It should be noted that these ships would neither be invincible or worthless in survivability. Their benefit is stability in choppy water and their ability to launch smaller landing craft. Large cogs obviously operate in deeper water with large cargoe holds and crew size. Medium sized cogs as well as small ones are also capable of operating in surprisingly shallow water, possibly 1 or 2 fathoms deep. Small Cogs, despite sub type, will be able to beach themselves without consequence, but would require the crew push them back out to sea manually. They'd also engage in ship to ship boarding actions and operate as a home point for the crew. Non siege type cogs would essentially be floating keeps, allowing archers to rain fire onto other ships or support a marine landing. Siege platforms, depending on size, could operate Catapults, Trebuchets, and Balistae. Siege engineering would play very heavily into the development of Military type cogs. Military types would be further divided into Siege platform and Troop platform types. Each size has a trade and military version. The cog would have 3 sizes, Large, Medium, and Small. In-game the Cog could be divided into Sub-types that carpenters/shipbuilders will have to strive to reach. Many kingdoms used them during the 10th through 12th century and is a precursor to the carrack and galleon. It is an incredibly flexible style of ship and was developed and in use during the actual in-game time period. The cog is probably the most likely and perfect ship to add to the MMO. Obviously they will have to, but this will hopefully make their life easier, and give them an idea of what the playerbase is looking for in regards to the complete and total implementation of boats. My goal here is to develop/brainstorm so that the devs don't have to. Hello! My name is Fireysaltine, and as you can see this is a Topic entirely centered around boats and they're implementation in LIF:MMO.
